It all started when Target quietly shut down parts of its DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) efforts earlier this year. They ended their Racial Equity Action and Change program and stopped participating in diversity surveys, moves that many saw as caving to political pressure. That sparked a 40-day boycott in March 2025, led by advocacy groups who were frustrated with the backpedal. Target saw a drop in store traffic and even got hit with a class-action lawsuit from investors.
Not long after, Walmart also started cutting back on its DEI programs, and now they’re facing a boycott too, organized by a group called the People’s Union USA. Their protest kicked off on April 7, and while it’s still early, it shows that people are watching these big companies closely.
These boycotts aren’t just one-offs, they’re part of a growing movement. People are pushing back and demanding that companies stay true to their public commitments around equity and inclusion. Target may have been the first, but it won’t be the last. Groups are already talking about future actions, including one focused on Amazon. Bottom line, consumers are tired of companies saying one thing and doing another, and they’re not staying quiet about it.
